Draft is a route constraint, not a ranking

A shallower yacht can expand practical access, but choosing the shallowest yacht at any cost can create compromises elsewhere. Hull form, propulsion, ride, accommodations, machinery and performance all interact with draft.

Treat draft as one of the hard constraints in the mission—not as a universal score for whether the yacht is 'good for the Bahamas.'

Use the yacht's real published measurement

Manufacturers do not always describe draft the same way. Azimut, for example, specifies the Fly 53 draft including propellers at full load. When comparing yachts, confirm whether the figure includes running gear and what loading condition it represents.

A few inches can matter only if the route says they matter

If two yachts differ modestly in draft but both comfortably clear every route and marina in your normal itinerary, another attribute may deserve more weight. If a preferred anchorage or passage is close to the operating limit, the same difference can become decisive.

Charting should drive the decision

NOAA's Custom Chart system lets mariners depict a safety contour based on vessel draft, which illustrates the core navigation principle: safe-water interpretation changes with the vessel underneath you.

For an actual Bahamas passage, use current appropriate charts and navigation products for the route, account for conditions, and use local or professional knowledge when the situation warrants it.

Compare draft alongside propulsion and handling

A buyer considering IPS, pods or shaft-drive yachts should look at the whole underwater package and how it affects draft, maneuvering, service access and protection—not only the single published depth figure.

Build a route-based draft test

List the marinas, approaches, anchorages and cruising areas that matter most. Mark which are must-have versus nice-to-have. Then test each yacht's verified draft against that list. This converts a vague 'Bahamas draft' question into a buying requirement you can defend.
